How To Add Presets to the Lightroom App

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom

If you use the Adobe Lightroom app, a faster way to edit pictures is with presets. Presets are extension files that, when you install, allow Lightroom to apply specific development settings when editing images. The only trouble is, how do you add presets to the Lightroom app?

Quick Answer

To add presets to the Lightroom app, you need to import the preset DNG files into the app. Once imported, click the three dots at the upper right corner of your screen and create a new preset. You can purchase the DNG files online or extract them from Lightroom Desktop

Whether you are using the free Adobe Lightroom version or a subscriber, the options you have to add presets to the Lightroom app are slightly different. This article will elaborate on the steps to add presets to Lightroom.

Methods To Add Presets to Lightroom

There are two ways to add presets to the Lightroom mobile app. If you are subscribed to Adobe Creative Cloud, we recommend you sync your desktop to your mobile device or download the preset ZIP file, which is straightforward.

But if you don’t have an active Adobe Creative Cloud subscription, we recommend you extract the DNG file from the Adobe Lightroom CC desktop app and install it on your smartphone.

Method #1: Install Presets Without a Desktop

You can add a preset to your mobile app without needing a desktop. All you have to do is to purchase the preset pack online, which often comes in a ZIP folder, then you unzip it and install it. This method is ideal for you if you use the free version of the Lightroom app for mobile devices.

Here’s how to install a preset without a desktop.

  1. When you purchase the preset pack, it will be in a ZIP file which you have to unzip using a third-party app like iZip for iOS or Android.
  2. Extract and save the file to local or cloud storage like Dropbox or Drive.
  3. Launch the Lightroom mobile app on your smartphone, and from the “Library Module”, select “Add photo”
  4. Select “From file” to import the preset from your local storage or the cloud storage you unzipped the file.
  5. Click on the preset file to bring it to the app.
  6. Now that the preset DNG file is imported, select one to open it in the “Edit Module”, and since they already have a preset applied to them, all you have to do is save the adjustment as a new preset so you can use it later.
  7. To save the preset, tap on the three-dot icon at the top right corner of your screen and choose the option “Create Preset”
  8. Set the preset name, choose where you want to group it, and then include the adjustment you want in the preset, and click on “Save” to add the preset to the Lightroom app.
Quick Tip

Selecting all the adjustments when saving a new preset is ideal so you don’t accidentally exclude something important.

Method #2: Install Presets With a Desktop

Another way to add presets to the Lightroom app is with a desktop. For this method, you must have an Adobe Creative Cloud subscription as you would be enabling sync.

Here’s how to add a preset to the Lightroom app using a desktop.

  1. Launch the Lightroom CC on your desktop and import the DNG files you want to add as a preset by going to “Files” > “Import Profiles and Presets”
  2. When using a desktop, preset files are saved as XMP and not DNG, so select the preset you want to upload and then save it as a new preset.
  3. Lightroom CC has auto-sync enabled to other cloud-based Adobe applications by default. So, tap on the cloud icon at the top right corner of your screen, and enable sync if it is not enabled.
  4. Open Lightroom on your smartphone and tap on the cloud icon at the top right corner of your screen to open the syncing options.
  5. Ensure you are connected to the internet and the sync option is enabled on your smartphone.
  6. The preset files you saved on your smartphone will also automatically appear on your smartphone.
Important

Ensure you have the Adobe Lightroom CC on your desktop, not the Lightroom Classic, when you want to use the sync option.

Conclusion

As you can see from this guide, adding presets to the Lightroom app is straightforward to use. You must know what works best for you and use that method to add the preset to your device. It doesn’t matter whether you are using an iOS or Android smartphone; you can add presets on both devices. So, if you have not been taking advantage of the ability to add a custom preset to the Lightroom app on mobile devices because you don’t know how to, well, now you know how to. Add a preset today and edit your photo just the way you’d love it.
