How To Make the Alarm Louder on iPhone

Alarms On Iphone

If your iPhone alarm isn’t loud, it won’t do its job by waking you up when you want it. Except your iPhone’s speaker is terrible, it ought to sound audible enough for you to notice. So, if your iPhone’s alarm isn’t as loud as it used to be, how can you make it louder?

Quick Answer

To make your iPhone’s alarm louder, try increasing the volume with the side volume buttons or from Settings. If that doesn’t work, check your alarm sounds and ensure a loud sound is chosen. Also, if you have a headphone connected (wireless or wired) to your iPhone, it can reduce the volume the alarm plays through the built-in speakers.

Your iPhone volume switch can be set to either adjust the ringer volume (which controls the ringer, notification, alarm, and system alert) or the media volume (which controls the music and video). Hence, you shouldn’t mistake increasing the media volume, thinking it is the ringer volume.

Steps To Making Your Alarm Louder on iPhone

There are a couple of reasons your iPhone’s alarm may not be loud or produce sound. Here we will be looking at three reasons your alarm is not audible and how to fix it.

Keep in Mind

Enabling “Do Not Disturb” or using the silent switch does not affect the alarm; it should still sound normally.

Method #1: Adjust Volume

As we said, you can use your iPhone volume keys to control the ringer or media volume. By default, the volume keys are used to control the ringer volume. However, you can switch to control media volume by going to Settings > “Sounds & Haptics“> “Change with Button“.

However, if you did not switch the volume buttons and due to one reason or the other, you turned down the volume, it will affect the loudness of the alarm. You can change that by increasing the volume. You can use side volume on your phone or go to settings and adjust the volume from there.

Here’s how to make your alarm louder by adjusting the volume in the Settings.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone from the home screen or a shortcut.
  2. Scroll down to “General“, then click it.
  3. In the “General” menu, click on “Sounds & Haptics“.
  4. Under the “Ringers and Alerts” section, you will see a slider; drag the slider to increase the volume.

Method #2: Set a Loud Alarm Sound

Another reason your alarm volume may be low is that you accidentally removed the alarm sound. If the alarm sound is set to none, vibrate only; then, when your alarm goes off, you wouldn’t hear anything. You can fix this by setting an alarm sound that is louder enough to notify you.

Here’s how to make your alarm louder by setting a loud alarm sound.

  1. Open the Clock app on your iPhone from the home screen or use a shortcut
  2. Add an alarm if you don’t have an active one. But if you have an active alarm, tap “Edit” at the top-left corner of your screen.
  3. Tap the alarm you set, then click the “Sounds” option.
  4. In the “Sounds” option, if the ringtones are set to none, remove it by selecting a ringtone of your choice.

Method #3: Disconnect Headphones

The loudness of your iPhone’s alarm can also be affected if you have headphones connected. Whether connected wirelessly or with wire, it reduces the loudness of the alarm through your iPhone’s built-in speaker

The alarm volume will be much louder through the headphones or speaker you are connected to. So, you can use the speaker to boost the loudness of the alarm volume. But if you do not want to connect headphones or speakers to your iPhone, you should disconnect it.

Here’s how to make your alarm louder by disconnecting headphones.

  1. If it is a wired headphone or speaker, disconnect it by simply unplugging the wire
  2. Open the Settings app from the home screen or a shortcut if it is wireless.
  3. In the Settings menu, tap the “Bluetooth” option.
  4. Find the device you are connected to, tap it, and then click “Disconnect“.

It is always helpful to be familiar with where simple settings like adjusting your iPhone’s volumes are. You never can tell when you may need to turn off your phone call ringer volume without turning off your alarm. Or when you may want to turn down your media volume without turning off the alarm volume.

Note that you can always set a custom alarm ringtone. So, if all the stock ringtones for your iPhone’s alarm ringtone are not loud enough, you can always use a custom ringtone.
