During the pandemic, Zoom was the source of our work meetings, online classes, and even job interviews. What can we say? It is a great application! But there is one thing that we all couldn’t figure out; how do you record on Zoom? 

Quick Answer

You cannot deny that the question has troubled you. The process is a bit more complicated than recording on a PC. But once you get the host’s permission, it becomes easy. All you need to do is join a meeting and tap on the three buttons at the bottom of the screen. In the pop-up menu, select Record. 

But that’s not all we will be telling you in this blog. You will also know how to record on the Zoom app whether you have an iOS or an Android phone. In addition, we will give you additional tips on recording meetings with or without the host’s permission.

Record a Meeting on the Zoom Desktop App

Whether you forgot to attend a meeting on Zoom or wish to relive it again, you can do so with the recording feature. A bonus tip? It is free! Here is how;

  1. Join or start a meeting.
  2. Tap on the “More” button at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Now, click on “Record on the Computer”.
  4. Once the recording starts, you can pause and stop the recording when you please.

The recording is saved in an mp4 file in the default folder. If you want to change the locations of your saved recordings, follow these steps:

  1. Open the application and head down to the “Settings”.
  2. Click on the “Recording” tab
  3. Change the location to your desired folder. You can also create a new folder.
Warning

Recording on Zoom is free only for desktop users. If you wish to record on the Zoom app for your phone, you need a paid subscription. 

Record a Meeting on the Zoom Android App

Only paid users can use this feature. If you are not the host, you can record only if the host has permitted you. Here is what you need to do to record on the Zoom app;

  1. Open the Zoom application.
  2. Click on the “More” button.
  3. Tap on “Record”
  4. A tab will pop open at the top of the screen, indicating that the recording has started.
  5. You can pause/stop as per your ease.
  6. To access the recordings, you need to go to the Zoom website and head to “My Recordings”.

Record a Meeting on the Zoom iOS App

This is valid for paid users only and if the host has permitted you to record;

  1. Open the Zoom application.
  2. Click on the “More” button.
  3. Now choose “Record to the Cloud”
  4. The recording has started.
  5. You can press the pause/stop button to do as you please.
  6. You can view the saved recordings on the Zoom website.

If the computer/phone shuts down for any reason, you will lose your recording.

Recording a Meeting on the Zoom Without The Host’s Permission

It sure is a bummer If you cannot get the host’s permission to record. But don’t worry; you can still record using any third-party applications. The quality might be low, but you will get the purpose of recording the meeting.

However, if you are an iOS user, you can use the screen recording feature. Here is how:

  1. Go to “Settings”.
  2. Click on “Control Center” > “Customize Controls”.
  3. Do a quick search for the “Screen Recording” feature and click on the plus button near it.
  4. From the “Control Center”, click on the “Record” icon. (It will be a white box with two red circles).
  5. The recording has started.
  6. To stop the recording, click on the red bar at the top of the screen and tap on “Stop”.

You will find these bonus features under the Recordings tab on the Zoom website.

Automatic Recording – if you wish that the application automatically records your meetings, you can enable this feature. However, it may take up a lot of space.

Recording Consent– if people are not comfortable with recording meetings, you can turn on this feature. It will allow them to decide if they wish to be recorded. This is great for work meetings.

Give Permission to Record Meetings as a Host on Zoom

There are two different methods for this process. 

Method#1: Give Access to Record to All Users

  1. Go to the Zoom website and log in to your account.
  2. At the top of the screen, click on “My Account”.
  3. Head to the “Recordings” tab.
  4. Two tabs will open: Local Recordings and Cloud Recordings. Click on their “Settings”.
  5. Tick on the box that allows participants and hosts to record.
  6. They all must be paid subscribers.

Method#2: Give Access to Record to Selected Users

  1. Join the meeting.
  2. Go to the “Meetings Toolbar” > “Manage Participants”.
  3. Select the desired participant.
  4. Click on the “More” button.
  5. Tap on “Allow Record”.

A Cloud Recording is where the recordings save in an online folder on Zoom. Local Recordings are when you save them to your computer. The former is usually for smartphones and the latter for computers.
