Setting Nest Thermostat to Hold Temperature

Nest Thermostat

Thermostats have had the option to hold temperature almost back to their inception and popular embrace inside the home. Nest thermostats may come with a lot more brainpower than your standard thermostat, but they still utilize simple and long-used features, like holding temperature.

Quick Tip

There are seven generations of Nest Thermostat and they all allow you to set and hold your desired temperature by creating a manual schedule, resetting your schedules, and disabling eco-temperature and auto-schedule.

Setting your Nest Thermostat to hold forces it to act more like a traditional thermostat rather than a smart thermostat. The only way it will “hold” a temperature is if you essentially gut it of all of the smart features for which is it renowned.

However, that may be the preferable thing to do and, if you don’t mind jumping through a few hoops to get there, is not terribly difficult to set up just the way you want it.

Removing Auto-Scheduling

Auto-Scheduling is the first thing that has to go if you want to set your Nest Thermostat to hold temperature. If it remains on, it will schedule itself to how often it determines that you are home. It’s a sort of AI program that adjusts itself according to your habits.

  1. Bring up the Main Menu on your Nest Thermostat.
  2. Select the Gear icon for Settings.
  3. Select Nest Sense.
  4. Select Auto-Schedule.
  5. Turn Auto-Schedule Off.

It will take Nest a few seconds to disable the Auto-schedule feature, almost as if it is reluctant to do so, but it will disable it. When that’s done, you still have a few more things to do before getting the “hold” feature to work.

Also, you can disable the auto-schedule feature from your Nest App (Android or iOS).

  1. Select your Nest Thermostat once you open the Nest App.
  2. In the top, right-hand corner, select the Gear Icon.
  3. Go to the Nest Sense category.
  4. Select Auto-Schedule.
  5. Select Off.

Remove the Eco-Temperature

The eco-temperature setting is a feature that adjusts the temperature when you are away from home, as well as adjusting the temperatures based on other eventualities, in order to save energy over the course of your monthly bill.

  1. Open the Main Menu on your Nest Thermostat.
  2. Select the Gear Icon.
  3. Select Home/Away Assist.
  4. Select Stop Using.

You can also control this feature from your smartphone, using the Nest app.

  1. Select your Nest Thermostat from the main screen.
  2. Gear Icon.
  3. Select Home/Away Assist.
  4. Select Stop Using.

Reset your Nest Thermostat Schedule

Resetting your Nest Thermostat’s schedule is the final task you need to do before you can set it up to hold the temperature settings wherever you set it.

  1. Bring up the Main Menu on your Nest Thermostat.
  2. Gear Icon.
  3. Reset.
  4. Scroll down to Select Schedule.
  5. Select Reset.
  6. You will then have to physically turn the Nest Ring on the thermostat to confirm.

Now, you can either set a new, standard schedule or you can leave it where it is at. Google designed the Nest Thermostat with a lot of automations in mind, however, once you remove all of those automations, your Nest Thermostat basically becomes a traditional, non-smart thermostat.

Whatever temperature you set it to, from this point forward, will be the temperature that the Nest Thermostat maintains for the long haul.

Set a New, Manual Schedule

You don’t have to do this, but it’s something that you can do with a traditional thermostat, and it’s something that you may want to do here, especially if you prefer the temperature to adjust during certain points of the day.

If you don’t use the manual schedule, the temperature setting will always remain constant.

  1. From the Nest Thermostat, open the Main Menu.
  2. Select the Calendar Icon for scheduling.
  3. Select a customized Timeframe for each day as you see fit.

Setting up a manual schedule is pretty straightforward and isn’t much different from a regular thermostat. However, you can also manage your manual schedule through your smartphone, with the Nest app.

  1. Open the Nest App.
  2. Select your Nest Thermostat.
  3. Select the Calendar Icon.
  4. You can now completely customize your schedule.

You can further protect your temperature hold by locking the Nest Thermostat with a PIN #.

  1. Select your Nest Thermostat.
  2. Select the Gear Icon.
  3. Select Lock.
  4. Confirm.
  5. Select a PIN #.
  6. Enter your PIN #.
  7. Choose the Modes that you want locked.
  8. Select your Temperature Settings for each lock.

That’s it. Now you have your manual settings, a temperature for the Nest Thermostat to hold at, and each setting locked under a PIN # that you selected. You are now in complete control of your thermostat and all of the automations are removed.

Final Thoughts

While all of the automations on the Nest Thermostat are nice, it’s often easier to just set things the way you want them. Even though it will no longer function as a smart thermostat, you can always change that by simply saying the word to your Google Assistant.
